M.W. Reutter Porzellanfabrik GmbH was founded in 1948 by the married couple Martl and Willy Reutter. The company was based in the German town of Denkendorf. Martl brought to the company her passion for the production of pottery miniatures.
In 1954, the company switched to the manufacture of porcelain and increased its production volume due to the rapid upturn in the German economy after the Second World War. In 1968, the raw production was moved to a facility acquired in the nearby town of Nürtingen, but the painting, decorating and firing remained in Denkendorf. In 1980, the entire production was moved to a new building in the town of Denkendorf.
In 1956 Willy joined the company and as a specialist in precision engineering worked on introducing new technologies. Later, the business was joined by two sons of Martl and Willy: Bernd and Bertram. Bernd joined a company in 1974 as a ceramic engineer, and Bertram, an economist, joined in 1980. Bertram has become the Managing Director of the company.
Since 1948, they have produced handmade crockery on a potter's wheel. The first pieces weren't marked. They started marking their production in 1954. The mark was a golden stamp representing the cloister of Denkendorf. Martl Reutter soon created a new mark using the letters M W and R.
Ashtrays and perfume atomizers were the first items produced in large quantities. They also sold hobby kits with white porcelain and patterns intended for self-painting. In the late 1950s children tea sets, miniature porcelain toys, and gift items production started. In the mid 70s they obtained the first license from Australian artist Sarah Kay. In 1991 M.W. Reutter acquired the rights to use drawings of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel on its items. Later other designs were added (Peter Rabbit, Paddington Bear, Flower Fairies, etc.).
